Text Box: Firebug
Chestnut Quarter Horse Stallion
(Doc’s Cannon X JJ Hank Baby)

“Firebug” came to us extremely thin. He had a hole in front of his
belly button that would occasionally spew out chewed hay and water.
It only seemed to irritate him when stuff would squirt out the hole.
It also irritated the left hind leg that was always wet.
Our vet had never seen anything like this. We decided to just start
giving him some much needed nutrition. We also used some
herbal salve on the hole. After he put on about 75lbs,
we dewormed him. Soon the hole started to heal over and he
put on weight fast. His energy came up and he became a playful stallion.
The hole completely healed over and he’s had no trouble since.

Text Box: Piney’s Tiger Rag aka Suki
Black pinto Miniature Mare

Suki was free fed hay cubes and grain until she became
extremely over weight and foundered. Her owner didn’t know what to
do for her and wasn’t sure if she would even survive, so she was given to us. She could only shakily stand a few times a day with help to eat and drink because of the pain. With a lot of hoof care and a good diet, Suki is
doing much better. She can now run and play with the other horses although she is not as fast and she can’t kick due to a stifle
injury as a foal. But she is very energetic and knows how to hold her own.
As long as we are very strict with her diet, Suki does great.

Text Box: What A Star
APHA Paint Chestnut & White Gelding

After having his tendons severely bowed, Star became
useless to his owner and was given to us.
He would sit back on his hind legs and shuffle his front legs to get
around because he could not put much weight on the front legs.
We treated him with homemade herbal liniment on his tendons daily,
and got some good Ferrier work done on him. In a few weeks, he
was able walk on his front feet comfortably again.
Soon he could be ridden without limping at all. After every ride,
his tendons had to be cooled down with water to keep them sound.
He was a great horse, I really enjoyed him.

Stars tendons before.

You can see how swollen they are.

Star after. Not a very clear picture but you can

see his tendons are not bothering him.

Text Box: Mercedes
Bay Paso Fino Mare

Mercedes had developed some severe abbesses in her front feet. Her owner did not have time to give her the care she needed and asked us if we wanted to take her. When we went to pick her up, she was standing in her pen with her hind legs tucked as far under her belly as she could get them, to take the weight off her front feet. She had been off her feed, because of the pain and was very thin. We drained the abscesses, getting a lot of pus and blood, and then trimmed her feet at a better angle, which made it much easier for her to stand. We kept her hooves clean and used an herbal liniment in the abbesses. Within four months she was perfectly sound. I regret not getting any ‘before’ pictures but I do have several of her now.
Text Box: Willow
Burro Grulla Jenny
(feral X feral)

“Willow” is a 30+ year old burro given to us by some
friends who could no longer care for her. She was very thin
and her bray was so quiet you had to stand close to hear her.
With giving her the right nutrition and taking care of her
teeth, Willow gained weight and now her bray can be
heard two blocks away! She currently has a wonderful
home with the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary,
where she lives with Grandpa Bernie and is
known as “Grandma Willow”.
